“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE LAST ONE FOR 86 YEARS
The Red Sox shutout Chicago
for the third time

June 13, 1918 ...  The Chicago White Sox submitted to another whitewash today at the hands of the Red Sox, making only five hits off Dutch Leonard.  The score was 6 to 0. This was the third time, the Red Sox have blanked Chicago in four days.

The White Sox. Not only were helpless at bat, but gave Eddie C caught nearly all that is left of their pitching staff poor support. It was so bad that the fans booed the home players.  Cicotte was relieved of his hopeless task at the end of seven innings and Joe Benz pitched the two remaining frames.  Leonard gave the White Sox more base on balls than hits with six players making base.  With a lot of opportunities to score Chicago could not capitalize on any of them.

The Red Sox got two runs, off Cicotte in the opening inning, partly due to a slip on his part.  Dave Shean beat out a roller it to Swede Risberg with one out, and made second because Risberg threw widely to first.   Amos Strunk flied out deep enough to let Shean get the third and Cicotte accidentally handed Stuffy McInnis one in the outside, that he push into right field for three bases, scoring both runners.

The next pair of runs came over in the fifth inning. Everett Scott led with a double to center, Wally Schang beat out a bunt to third base and moved to second when Leonard grounded out to Eddie Collins.  Harry Hooper then singled, scoring both runners.

Eddie Murphy gave the Red Sox their fifth run in the sixth inning.  Two were out, when Fred Thomas singled through Risberg, and  Scott deposited a Texas leaguer in short right.  Thomas kept on running and rounded third while Murphy fumbled the ball and the run counted.

Two more were out in the seventh before Leonard paved the way for another run with a single, Strunk walked and Ruth cut loose his first and last hit of the series, scoring Leonard.
