HERB PENNOCK

Pennock wins his own game with a double

June 11, 1921 ... After being shut out for seven innings, the Red Sox came back in a flash, in the eighth inning, to not only wipe out a two run deficit, but to win the game 4 to 2 over the Chicago White Sox.

Harry Hooper was given an enthusiastic welcome by the fans when he first came up to bat. He tipped his hat several times and then popped up to Everett Scott.

Herb Pennock pitched a fine game and if he had not made a miscue, only one run would have been scored against him. Pennock himself committed an error but also banged out a double and two singles, one of which produced the winning runs.

The Red Sox had their opportunities. Although Ossie Vitt and Tim Hendryx both hit safely in the first inning, they weren't brought in. Shano Collins opened the second inning with a double and Pennock delivered a base hit, but Collins was thrown out trying to score.

The White Sox scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning. A base hit and a sacrifice put a runner on second. Then Eddie Collins banged a shot off Pennock's foot and it bounced toward the first base line. Pennock bounded after the ball and threw wildly past Stuffy McInnis, allowing a run to score. The next inning, an infield hit was followed by a double, that scored Chicago's second run.

With a two run lead the way Chicago's Dom Mulrennan was pitching, the Red Sox chances looked bleak. But the eighth inning changed all that. Del Pratt hit a line drive off the wall, good for two bases to start it off. Hendryx singled to center and Pratt scored. McInnis next dumped the ball along the first base line, sacrificing Hendryx over to second, but firstbaseman Earl Sheely hit Stuffy in the back with the throw. Shano Collins grounded out and Everett Scott lobbed a single into short center that scored Hendryx, with the tying run.

Red Faber came on to pitch for Chicago and Muddy Ruel hit a ground ball to Harvey Mulligan the shortstop, who threw the ball to the plate, catching McInnis in a rundown between home and third base. Pennock was up next a lined a base hit into center field that scored Scott easily with the go-ahead run. But Johnny Mostil slipped, trying to get the ball, and made a wild throw to third, trying to cut-off Ruel, who also scored.

Ahead now 4 to 2, Pennock got the White Sox 1-2-3 in the ninth and the game was his.
