MIKE MENOSKY

Mike Menosky gets four extra base hits
as the Sox take two from the Tigers

June 17, 1921 ... Upwards of 25,000 enthusiastic fans saw the Red Sox win both games of a doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers. It took 10 innings to determine the winner in the first game, which was finally won, 5 to 4, but the second game was close also as the Red Sox held off the Tigers and took that one 6 to 4.

It was a big day for Mike Menosky who made a single, a double and a triple in four times up during the opening game, scoring three of the six runs. Menosky had a triple and a home run in his first two chances at bat. In the second game he was passed twice and scored four of the six runs Red Sox runs. His home run went deep into the right-field bleachers and one of his triples was prevented from going into the stands by Harry Heilman, who blocked the ball with one hand after making a high jump close to the fence.

Each side scored a run in the first inning of the first game. Blue led off for the Tigers with a single to left and went to second on a sacrifice by Donie Bush, scoring on Ty Cobb's double to centerfield. For the Red Sox, with one out Menosky doubled to left and scored on a single by Tim Hendryx.

In the fourth inning, with one out, Bobby Veach got a double when Del Pratt lost his ball in the sun attempting to catch a pop up. He scored on a single by Joe Sargent.  The Red Sox tied the score again at 2 to 2 in the sixth inning on a single by Menosky, an out and a double by Hendryx.

The Sox took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Donie Bush fumbled Shano Collins' grounder, Scott sacrificed him to second and Herb Pennock doubled him in.

Down a run, Detroit retook the lead again in the eighth-inning when Cobb doubled and Harry Heilman followed with a home run over the left-field wall, making the score 4-3.

But the Red Sox came back once again to tie up the game in their half of the eighth-inning. Menosky led off with a triple, which missed being a home run by a matter of inches when Heilman batted the ball down. Pratt subsequently brought him home with a sacrifice fly, on which Heilman made a brilliant catch, after a long run into deep center field.

So in the 10th inning, Hendryx beat out an infield hit to begin and Stuffy McInnis sacrificed him to second. Everett Scott was passed intentionally to get at Muddy Reul, who then slashed a single over third base putting Hendryx over with the run for a 5 to 4 walkoff victory.

Howard Ehmke came right out and started the second game and Joe Bush started for the Red Sox and got the Tigers in order for the first three innings.

Menosky started things off for the Sox with a triple to right in the first inning and scored on a single by Pratt. On a hit-and-run play, Hendryx had to go after an outside pitch and accidentally connected with it, the ball shooting past first base for a double. McInnis brought Pratt home from third with a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Menosky was first up and drew a pass, making his way all the way around on Pratt's triple to right.

The first hit off Joe Bush came in the fourth inning when Lou Blue lined a pitch into the right-field bleachers.

The Tigers scored again in the fifth inning after two were out, on a double and a single, cutting the score to 3 to 2. But in the Red Sox half of the fifth inning, Menosky was walked and with two outs, McInnis singled and Shano Collins legged out a double, as the ball took a crazy hop by Ty Cobb in right. Menosky finished the Sox scoring with a home run in the seventh inning.

But down 6 to 2, the Tigers threatened in the eighth. Johnny Bassler connected for a single to center and Blue lined a ball to Collins that fooled him and went for a double, scoring the runner. Ira Flagstead pinch-hit and doubled to right, to score Blue. With one out, Cobb grounded to McInnis for an easy out and Veach bounced to Del Pratt at second to end the game as the Sox had held on to win 6 to 4.
