The Sox comeback with two in
the eighth June 27, 1921 ... With two outs in the eighth inning, the Red Sox rallied and scored two runs and another two runs in the ninth inning to come back and win an exciting game from the Philadelphia Athletics, 6 to 5. Del Pratt came through with a clutch double in the eighth to score two runners. Then a costly error by the Philadelphia pitcher helped throw the game away for the A's in the ninth inning. Both Allen Russell and A's pitcher Eddie Rommel were knocked around. The Sox started the scoring in the second inning, with singles by Stuffy McInnis and Shano Collins. A sacrifice bunt by Everett Scott and a base hit from Roxy Walters put the Sox up 2 to 0. Nemo Leibold led off the third with a double but was left on base. The Sox bats then went silent until the eighth inning. Meanwhile, the A's tied up the game with a run in the third inning and another in the fifth. Then in the eight inning they scored three more runs to take the lead by three, 5 to 2. Things looked bleak for the Red Sox going into the home half of the eighth. With two outs, Kid Foster and Mike Menosky both reached base on a hit and a walk. Del Pratt then lined a double to deep center that scored both of them. Into the ninth inning and behind by one run, Shano Collins reached on a base hit and went to third when Everett Scott blooped the ball into short center. Centerfielder Frank Welch tried to get Collins who rounded second and was heading to third. Thirdbaseman Joe Dugan blocked the off-line throw and it rolled only a few yards away from him. Eddie Rommel, who was backing up third, grabbed the ball and fired to second, to get Scotty, who saw the ball bounce away and tried to take advantage of it. But the throw went into centerfield and Collins crossed the plate with the tying run and Scotty scooted over to third base. With the A's playing in, Roxy Walters smashed the ball at Chick Galloway the shortstop, who was in on the grass. He juggled the ball and it was long enough for Scotty to shoot over the plate with the winning run. |
