A BRAND NEW FENWAY PARK OPENS
... May 6, 1934 ... Nearly 30,000 fans were treated to one of the greatest exhibitions of hitting ever seen in one inning of a ball game. It was an inning where 11 hits were struck and that included four triples in succession, four doubles and five singles. Twelve runs were made in the fourth inning, giving the Red Sox a 14-4 win at the expense of three Detroit pitchers. The bombardment was started against Firpo Marberry by Carl Reynolds, who on his first time up, tripled to right. He came up with one out a lined another triple to right center. Moose Solters followed with another one in the same area. Rick Ferrell dropped another one out there and Bucky Walters duplicated the performance of the other three. Then Rube Walberg singled and Elon Hogsett was brought in to pitch. Max Bishop tried to sacrifice and was safe on Marv Owen's throwing error. Billy Werber singled to center and Ed Morgan popped up to Mickey Cochrane. Roy Johnson came up for a second time and doubled to left. Reynolds and Solters singled, bringing in Steve Larkin to pitch. He walked Rick Ferrell and then Walters doubled. Walberg got a base hit and Bishop forced Walberg at second for the third out. That was it as the Sox only managed two hits during the rest of the game. Carl Reynolds had four hits in the last game including a double. Today he had two triples and a single in three times up, hitting safely seven times in succession. |
