BUCKY WALTERS |
A BRAND NEW FENWAY PARK OPENS
...
Two grandslam
homers are
knocked out by the Red Sox
May 13, 1934 ... The
hard and timely hitting, fortified by a splendid pitching performance
by Gordon Rhodes, earned the Red Sox a 14 to 2 victory over the
Chicago White Sox.
Twice, with the bases loaded and nobody out, home runs were hit by
Bucky Walters and then by Ed Morgan. Later in the game, Walters hit
another homer, this time with just one man on base. Walters had two
homers, a triple and a single in five times up. The triple might have
been caught if Mule Haas had not fallen down while trying to retrieve
a ball that hit the base of the center field wall. He drove home six
runs.
Milt Gaston was on the mound for the White Sox and didn't make it out
of the second inning. Joe Heving came in and gave up Morgan's
grandslam. He lasted until the seventh inning, when Walters blasted
out his second homer. Lester Tietjen took over and shut down the Red
Sox batters thereafter.
Rhodes allowed eight White Sox hits, bunching a pair of them twice in
one inning, resulting in a run each time. |
