WES FERRELL |
A BRAND NEW FENWAY PARK OPENS
...
Wes Ferrell stars in his first Red Sox
start
June 10, 1934
... Wes Ferrell, in his first starting assignment
as a member of the Red Sox, not only pitched a masterful game, but
drove in the winning run, after two were out in the ninth inning, as
the Red Sox defeated Washington, 4 to 3.
The Sox were either trailing or working from a tie score from the
second inning on. In the second and third innings, Ferrell passed the
first batter up and the Nationals worked in some hits to score their
three runs. In the fourth he gave up a double and after the
runner was able to make it over to third, Ferrell stranded him there.
The Sox got their first run in the first inning, after Bill Cissell
and Billy Werber each singled. Cissell scored on a grounder to second
and Werber came home when Washington's starter, Tommy Thomas balked.
Werber, on third, made it look as if he were going to steal home just
when Thomas started to pitch. But Thomas stepped off the rubber and
threw the ball to his catcher, Moe Berg. That is a balk, so Werber
just trotted home.
In the fifth inning, after two were out, Cissell hit the ball over
the wall onto Lansdowne Street after two were out, and tied the score
at 3-3. Then it became a pitching battle until the ninth inning.
Carl Reynolds opened the ninth inning with a double to left. Dick
Porter sacrificed him to third and Rick Ferrell was purposely passed.
Max Bishop came up as a pinch hitter and was also intentionally
walked, loading the bases and setting up a force at any base, with
the Sox pitcher due up. But Wes Ferrell sent a flyball to deep center
and Reynolds tagged up and sprinted home with the walk-off winning
run. |
