Lyn Lary brings in the winning run
with a double in the ninth inning
June 16, 1934
... Lyn
Lary doubled high off the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth
inning, bringing home Dick Porter with the walk-off winning run, and
giving the Sox a thrilling 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Browns.
Porter had led off the ninth inning with the score tied. He stroked a
single to right and was sacrificed to second by Rick Ferrell. He
sprinted home to end a pitching duel between Wes Ferrell and George
Blaeholder, after each team had scored a pair of runs.
Ferrell gave up ten hits that resulted in the two runs. A double and
a single accounted for one run in the fourth inning and another
double, followed by another single scored the Browns' second run an
inning later.
The Sox had jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Three consecutive singles by Bill Cissell, Billy Werber and Ed
Morgan, followed by a sac fly from Roy Johnson scored the pair.
After the Browns tied the game, both pitchers gave up a few hits that
didn't cause them any major trouble.
Rick Ferrell had a pair of doubles for two hits and both Werber and
Morgan also knocked out a pair of safeties in the game. |
