WES FERRELL

A BRAND NEW FENWAY PARK OPENS ...
The Sox rally for four runs in the
ninth inning for a walk-off win

July 7, 1934 ... Wes Ferrell came off the bench to pinch hit and slugged a double with one out in the ninth inning, that scored two runs and gave the Red Sox a come from behind walk-off win.

The Sox were down 1-0 after Mike Higgins' homered in the second inning. In the Sox half of the third inning, two fielding errors by the A's allowed the Sox to tie the game.

The A's recaptured the lead in the fourth inning on three singles and grabbed another run in the fifth, to grab a 3-1 lead.

In the Sox half of the fifth they battled back to tie the game. Ed Morgan doubled in Max Bishop, who had walked, and Roy Johnson brought Morgan in with a single to left.

In the seventh inning, Philly exploded for five runs off Sox starter, Gordon Rhodes, making the score a difficult 8-3 mountain to overcome.

But the Sox came back, yet again, in their half of the inning and got the lead down to a one run deficit. Bishop and Johnson both drew walks of Sugar Cain, who also gave up a base hit to Billy Werber, leaving the bases loaded for Joe Cascarella. But Cascarella walked Dick Porter, allowing Werber to trot home. Rick Ferrell lined a single that brought home both Reynolds and Johnson, who were on the move with two outs. The score was now 8 to 7.

Herb Pennock came in to pitch the eighth. He walked Jimmie Foxx and Higgins reached on a bobbled grounder to Lyn Lary. Bing Miller's double scored both runners putting the A's up by three, 10-7.

That was the way things stayed when the Sox took their last turn at bat. Ed Morgan lined a single and Roy Johnson followed with a double that sent Morgan to third. Both scored on Carl Reynolds' single to left.

Roy Mahaffey then came in to pitch for Philly, still with nobody out and a 3-0 count on Dick Porter. He threw one ball and walked him. Rick Ferrell next sac-bunted back to the pitcher, to move both players up.

Wes Ferrell took a bat and came up to hit for Sox pitcher Rube Walberg, the Sox' fourth pitcher of the game. He blasted a shot off the left-center field wall, scoring Reynolds and Porter with the third and fourth runs of the inning and giving the Red Sox an 11-10 victory.
