“DIARY OF A WINNER”

PUG RENTNER

BOSTON'S NFL EAST CHAMPS

October 17, 1936 ... Faced with a glorious opportunity to gain on Pittsburgh, the Redskins meet last place Philadelphia.  The Eagles do not have a good balance, but they have stars such as Dave Smukler, ex-Temple ace, “Swede” Hanson, and “Eggs” Mannske.  Redskins coach Red Flaherty has a nice looking new backfield of Pug Rentner, Eddie Britt, Harry Wiesenbaugh and Ed Justice, and should fill in well for Cliff Battles who is still favoring a bad ankle.  Ed Smith will take his place as the other carrying quarterback if all goes well.  Eddie Kahn of Boston English and North Carolina University will get his first starting chance at guard.  The Redskins and the Packers have ousted the Bears from the lead as the best offensive team in the NFL.  The Packers took the lead with 1116 yards while the Redskins gained second place with 1034 yards.

The Redskins make the Eagles clawless

October 18, 1936 ... A very small crowd of less than 5000 showed up to see the Redskins trim the Philadelphia Eagles.  The increased price of admission to see an underperforming team is considered to be a large factor.  Minus, Cliff Battles the game appeared doomed to routine performances until Pug Rentner was given a good share of the ball-toting assignments which he fulfilled in spectacular fashion.  Along with guard Eddie Kahn, Wayne Milner also had a great game at left end and many considered him the games top performer.  The Skins registered 18 first downs including two touchdowns.  Former Holy Cross star, Eddie Britt completed 7 of 14 passes for 142 yards and rushed twenty times for 70 more.  The Redskins have been searching for years for a good quarterback and they may have found one.

The first scoring drive took place when Pug Rentner ran back a Philly punt, 18 yards to their 42 yard line. Charley Malone snatched an Eddie Britt pass for a first down at the 30. Britt picked up seven off tackle, and Renters ran it down to the 20.  Britt uncorked one toward the coffin corner the ball caromed off Wayne Milner’s hands into the anxious arms of Riley Smith, who wrestled his way across the goal line.  In the second half the Redskins orchestrated an 85 yard drive, with Renters doing most of the yard work.  The payoff punch was a 7 yd pass in the flat to Charley Malone who ran it 30 yards across the goal line untouched.
