October 18, 1936 ... A very small crowd of less than 5000 showed up to see the Redskins trim the Philadelphia Eagles. The increased price of admission to see an underperforming team is considered to be a large factor. Minus, Cliff Battles the game appeared doomed to routine performances until Pug Rentner was given a good share of the ball-toting assignments which he fulfilled in spectacular fashion. Along with guard Eddie Kahn, Wayne Milner also had a great game at left end and many considered him the games top performer. The Skins registered 18 first downs including two touchdowns. Former Holy Cross star, Eddie Britt completed 7 of 14 passes for 142 yards and rushed twenty times for 70 more. The Redskins have been searching for years for a good quarterback and they may have found one. The first scoring drive took place when Pug Rentner ran back a Philly punt, 18 yards to their 42 yard line. Charley Malone snatched an Eddie Britt pass for a first down at the 30. Britt picked up seven off tackle, and Renters ran it down to the 20. Britt uncorked one toward the coffin corner the ball caromed off Wayne Milner’s hands into the anxious arms of Riley Smith, who wrestled his way across the goal line. In the second half the Redskins orchestrated an 85 yard drive, with Renters doing most of the yard work. The payoff punch was a 7 yd pass in the flat to Charley Malone who ran it 30 yards across the goal line untouched. |
