“DIARY OF A WINNER”

CLIFF BATTLES & TURK EDWARDS

BOSTON'S NFL EAST CHAMPS
Only 4800 fans see the Redskins crush
the Pirates and capture first place

November 29, 1936 ... Capitalizing on every break handed them, the Skins racked up 227 yards rushing and holding Pittsburgh to a net loss of two. All that is need is a tie with the Giants next week to clinch the divisional championship.

Cliff Battles was back in his usual form, running off tackle for consistent gains and running back kicks for 91 total yards.  He shared honors with young Vic Carroll, who came in at the end of the first half, when Eddie Kahn reinjured his knee, and turned in a phenomenal performance at guard.  He also recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass for a touchdown.

Turk Edwards, not to be out-done, recovered a Pittsburgh fumble in their own end zone for another touchdown. Battles gave Boston the advantage at the outset, returning the opening kickoff 30 yards to his own 48.  He picked up the first down to the 38, but Riley Smith missed a field goal to end the threat.

John Gildea knocked out a 50 yard punt for the Pirates, but Battles ran it back to the 42, and Riley Smith missed another kick three plays later.

After the Pirates could not move, Gildea smashed a 60 yard punt.  Pug Rentner then grabbed the handoff on the third play from scrimmage, and wriggled through the secondary, 52 yards to the Pittsburgh 14.

Battles picked up the first down to the one in three plays, and finally lunged over the goal line for the first score.  Most of the action took place in the Pittsburgh end for the rest of the half, when in the closing minutes, Wayne Milner downed Gildea with a fierce tackle that caused him to fumble.  Sam Busich then came into the game a nudged across a three pointer from the 15.

Boston kicked off with less than a minute to go in the half and was able to capitalize again, when Vic Carroll picked off a pass at the 35 and sprinted down the sideline for another score. Eddie Britt returned the second half kickoff to the 46.

Now the Pirates defense tighten and pushed the Redskins back to the 30 on a fumble and a penalty.  Riley Smith punted and Pittsburgh dropped the ball, giving Vic Carroll another fumble recovery.

Max Fiske then was able to pick off one of Riley Smith’s passes and ran it back 30 yards to the Boston 40 to turn the tide for the Pirates.  But Riley Smith picked off his next pass to squelch the only real Pittsburgh scoring threat.  Riley Smith buried Pittsburgh at their own five with a great punt early in the fourth quarter.  The Pittsburgh center than snapped the ball to nobody in a mixed up play and Turk Edwards jumped on the ball in the end zone for another Boston score.  Eddie Britt intercepted Gildea’s pass in the next series, and ran in down to the Pirate 35.

“Bull” Irwin making his debut for Boston threw an interception down the middle but redeemed himself by knocking the ball out of Stroot’s hands and recovered it at the 14 yard line.  On the next play, “Bull” romped through a wide hole and posted the final Boston score.
