BOSTON'S NFL EAST CHAMPS December 3, 1936 ... The Redskins may leave Boston for good, when they leave to take up residence at Westchester Country Club, in Rye NY, in preparation for the final game of the season against the Giants at the Polo Grounds. Owner George Preston Marshall hinted that even if they beat the Giants, the championship game against the Packers may be played elsewhere. Discouraged by poor attendance at home games, Marshall is looking for promising sites and is considering Chicago and Los Angeles very seriously. Advance ticket sales for the Giants game in New York is excellent, with more than 30,000 expected at the Polo Grounds. With the exception of Eddie Kahn, the Redskins are in fine shape and expected to lock down the Eastern Division title. |

The Redskins beat the Giants to advance to NFL Championship December 6, 1936 ... Still sporting Boston feathers, although they may never again inhabit Tom Yawkey’s wigwam, the Redskins slithered to a convincing 14-0 victory over the New York Giants in a cold drizzle, and clinching the right to meet the Packers for the NFL championship. Statistics gave the Giants the edge, but things like extra effort and hustle aren’t statistical categories, and the Redskins won that battle. A 38 yard drive and a 75 yard punt return by Cliff Battles produced the only scores. The Giants crossed midfield only twice in the first three periods. Boston’s gargantuan tackle, Turk Edwards had a great day, partially blocking two punts, recovering two Giant fumbles in New York territory and just gave an all-around outstanding effort. Battles earned his share of the honors with the longest touchdown run of the season, and was his usually slippery self. Between the tackles. Wayne Milner displayed his “All American” form at end, and Bull Irwin contributed some vicious plunges for valuable yards. Darkness set in early, and most of the second half was played under floodlights. |
