“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BOSTON'S NFL EAST CHAMPS
Green Bay beats the Redskins for
the NFL Championship title

December 13, 1936 ... The Boston Redskins were walloped today by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Championship Game, by a score of 21-6, at the Polo Grounds in New York.  Two long passes and a blocked punt gave the Packers their touchdown.  Green Bay’s power, speed and reserve strength were too much for Boston to contend with, especially after the Redskins lost Cliff Battles, with a leg injury, a few minutes after the game started.  Green Bay had a constant threat with its aerial attack, with Arnie Herber passing to his two favorite targets, Don Hutson and Johnny Blood.

The first half of the contest was exciting.  Green Bay jumped on the board when Herber connected with Hutson on the dead run with a 35-yard pass for their first touchdown.  The ball was on the Boston 43 yard line.  Herber took the snap and threw a strike to the coffin corner catching Hutson in full stride.  But the Redskins came back with a touchdown of their own on the first play of the second period.  Don Irwin and Pug Rentner ripped off large chunks of yardage between guard and tackle, moving the ball 78 yards, with Rentner taking it in from the 1-yard line for the score.  Riley Smith mixed the extra point leaving his team behind 7-6 at the half.

The break of the game went the Packers way in the second half.  Redskins center Frank Bausch was thrown out of the game for fighting along with the Packers Frank Butler.  Butler, a second stringer, wasn’t as big a loss as Bausch, who was the mainstay of their offense line at center.  His replacement, Larry Siemering was erratic at snapping for kicks and to the quarterback in shotgun formation.  As a result, Packer lineman were able to swarm the passers and kickers.  Riley Smith had two punts blocked in a row.  Lou Evans, blocked Smith's first punt in the fourth quarter and Green Bay was able to recover it at the Boston two yard line.  Bob Monnett swept it around end from there for the Green Bay score.  Green Bay’s won the championship because the team was proficient in every department all year, and stood head and shoulders above all its opponents.
