Mike Higgins drives home the
walk-off winning run in the 10th
August 7, 1937 ... The
Red Sox came from behind three times, twice with home runs, to beat
the Chicago White Sox, 5 to 4, for their 11th victory in 12 starts.
It set a new American League record for the season.
Mike Higgins drive by Zeke Bonura in the 10th inning with one out and
the bases loaded, provided the death blow for Chicago. Buster Mills
scored the winning run after leading off the inning with a single. An
walk to Joe Cronin and a base hit by Jimmie Foxx loaded the bases.
Down 1-0, Higgins singled to center in the first inning to score
Mills and tie the game. Mills had singled, went to second on Doc
Cramer's base hit, and stole third. The White Sox again went ahead
2-1, scoring a single run in the second inning.
In the third inning, Foxx blasted his 29th homer over the left field
wall to tie the score and then in the eighth inning, after Chicago
had gone ahead on Bonura's two-run homer, Ben Chapman connected with
a round tripper that scored Eric McNair ahead of him to deadlock the
game again at 4-4.
Lefty Grove went the rout for the Sox to get his 11th victory. The
White Sox used two pitchers, Ted Lyons and Clint Brown who relieved
him in the ninth inning. |
