Ben Chapman blasts a
three-run walk-off
homer in the bottom of the 9th inning
September 23, 1937 ... Ben Chapman's home run in the
ninth inning, with two men on and one out, gave the Red Sox a 4 to 3
walk-off win over the Tigers.
Red Sox farm hands, pitcher Jim Henry and catcher Johnny Peacock were
given starts. Henry was 14-11 at Minneapolis and faced the veteran
Eldon Auker.
Going into the ninth inning, the sore was tied at 1-1, Rudy York hit
a ball back to Henry. He blocked the ball with one hand but couldn't
get the handle. The next three Tiger batters all singled to score one
run. The other two were advanced to second and third on a sacrifice
bunt. Auker then lofted a fly ball to Doc Cramer in center, that
scored Rudy York, the runner from third. Marv Owen tried to go to
third also from second, but was cut down when Joe Cronin intercepted
Cramer's throw and tossed a strike to thirdbaseman Mike Higgins.
So the Sox found themselves down by two runs when they came to bat in
the bottom of the ninth. Joe Cronin led off with a double to the left
field corner. Jimmie Foxx was given a pass and Higgins advanced them
both with a sac bunt. Chapman was up next and Auker threw two pitches
wide of the mark. The next pitch was a ball down the middle and
Chapman sent it sailing over the left field wall to end the game. |
