Billy Hitchcock paces the Sox
once again

... Billy Hitchcock continued to pace the Red
Sox to a 10 to 1 triumph over the Detroit Tigers, by driving home
three runs on three singles, and giving Jack Kramer an easy 15th win.
Kramer spaced out eight hits and was accorded excellent support in
the field. He easily outpitched Virgil Trucks, although it was close
for the first five innings. For four innings the game was
scoreless. The Tigers were first to score in the fifth inning. With one gone,
Bobby Swift singled to center and was forced at second by Trucks. Eddie Lipon
blasted a triple to right-center that scored Swift. But then the Red Sox
countered in their half of the inning as Goodman opened with a double to left.
Tebbetts then rifled a single to right and Hitchcock drilled a hot shot by
George Vico at first, that scored Goodman. A bunt by Kramer moved the runners
over and Dom DiMaggio hit a long double to center that scored Tebbetts, but
Hitchcock was nailed at the plate.
The Sox broke the game wide open in the sixth, with a seven run outburst. Ted
Williams opened the inning with a line drive to right-field and stretched it
into a double. Vern Stephens flied out and then Trucks walked Stan Spence.
Goodman lined a fast single to left to load the bases and Trucks walked Tebbetts
to force in Williams. Hitchcock sewed it up with a single that scored Spence and
Goodman.
That was it for Trucks and in came Hal White. He proceeded to walk Kramer and
DiMaggio to force in another run. Then Johnny Pesky cleared the sacks when a
long shot to center good for three bases off the next pitcher, Billy Pierce.
Pierce finally got the side out by striking out Williams and getting Spence on a
fly ball. Three walks and Hitchcock's single in the seventh, accounted for the
Red Sox final and 10th run.
Billy Hitchcock has gotten five hits and knocked in six runs, in the two
games that he is played as Bobby Doerr's replacement. Doerr watched the game
from one of the rooftop boxes, taking some motion pictures for his private
collection.
Dom DiMaggio batted in three runs, as did Hitchcock and Pesky. In raised
Dom's total to 74, a new personal record.
The Red Sox closed the 15 game homestand, going 12-3. Against the Tigers
they've compiled a 9-2 mark. They started their homestand, in the middle of
August, against the Athletics and were three games out of first. They go on the
road tonight, to again meet the Athletics in Philadelphia, holding first place
by one game over the Yankees. |
