game scheduled ... The Red Sox have played great baseball for
more than two weeks. Playing every club except the Yankees, they have
won 15 of their last 18 games. They swept the series with Washington,
Chicago and Detroit, losing single games to the Athletics, Indians
and Browns. The teams batting average is .309, with opponents
hitting .279. In six of the games the Sox scored 10 a more runs and 10 games
they have knocked out more than 10 hits. No team in the American League is
matching the Red Sox for hitting and run production.
In the last homestand they have scored 106 runs, an average of seven per
game, while the opponents have scored less than five. Dom DiMaggio has hit .354;
Johnny Pesky has hit .345; Ted Williams has hit .352; and Vern Stephens has hit
.286 while driving in 19 runs and knocking out four home runs. Bobby Doerr has
hit .360; Billy Goodman has hit .365; Stan Spence as hit .260; and Birdie
Tebbetts has hit .326.
Trainer Eddie Froelich has worked hard on Bobby Doerr's injured thigh. Bobby
accompanied the Sox to Philadelphia, but it is not sure if he will play. |
