Jackie Jensen's home runs
give the Sox a doubleheader split
April 18, 1954 ... Jackie Jensen hit reliever Ed
Burtschy's first pitch in the 13th inning over the left field net, to
give the Red Sox a 4 to 3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics, in the
second game of a doubleheader. Jensen ended the game with his
second homer of the day and third of the season.
Gus Zernial hit two home runs for Philly while Harry Agganis' three
run homer accounted for the other runs in the game.
After Jimmy Piersall beat out a bunt and Jensen singled, Agganis
lined a homer into the right field stands to put the Sox out front, 3
to 1.
Zernial slammed his first homer in the second inning off Sox starter,
Sid Hudson, and then started a two-run rally in the fourth inning
with another off Hudson that tied the game at 3-3.
Ellis Kinder got credit for the victory after working the last three
innings. Burtschy entered the game in the ninth inning. Three more
scoreless inning were registered before Jensen's walk-off blast.
Bob Trice pitched out of several jams in the first game, giving the
A's a 6-4 win in the opener. He gave up 11 hits, including a two-run
homer by Jensen in the third inning. Agganis' single helped the Sox
get the other two runs. Philly knocked out Tom Brewer, the Sox
starter, in the fourth inning, after he had given up seven hits and
four runs. |
