The Red Sox trounce the A's
two times
in a doubleheader sweep
May 31, 1954 ... The
Red Sox unleashed their heaviest attack of the season that included
two home runs by Milt Bolling, and one each by Ted Williams, Jimmy
Piersall and Harry Agganis, to overwhelm the Philadelphia Athletics
20-10 and 9-0.
Rookie Tom Herrin was credited with his first major league win in the
opener, the highest scoring game of the American League season. Bill
Henry allowed seven scattered hits in the nightcap, pitching the
first shutout of the year for the Sox.
The Sox banged out 18 of the 30 hits in the opening game. Bolling
entered the day with an anemic .159 batting average but then
proceeded to slam out his first two homers of the year and knock in
five runs. His first homer came in a seven-run Sox fourth inning. He
went 2-for-4 in the second game to boost his average to .218
Jimmy Piersall lashed a homer into the centerfield bleachers besides
collecting two triples and two singles, increasing his average to
.283
In the first game, Williams got the fireworks ignited against Art
Ditmar in the first inning with his fourth round tripper, into the
right field grandstand, that was good for three runs. He wound up the
day bringing his average up to .408, with three hits in six trips.
In the second, fourth and sixth innings, the Sox batted around,
sending a total of 36 men to the plate, and scored four, seven and
five runs.
Herrin relieved starter, Tom Brewer, in the A's four-run second
inning and got the win. He tried to give the game away however and
was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. Ellis Kinder
finished the last three innings.
In the second game, Piersall nicked starter, Ozzie Van Brabant for
his first homer of the year. Harry Agganis, who was held hitless in
the opener, turned it on the the second game. The Sox loaded the
bases on a walk to Billy Goodman, a single by Williams and a pass to
Jackie Jensen. Agganis' three run double cleared the bases and he
then lined a homer in the sixth inning. |
