HARRY AGGANIS |
The Red Sox beat the Tigers
twice with
a walk-off slide home by Harry Agganis
June 7, 1954 ... Milt Bolling's 12th inning single
scored Harry Agganis from second base, to give the Sox a 5 to 4
victory over the Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader. Coupled
with a 3-2 victory in the opener, the Sox moved into 5th place in the
American League.
The hit by Bolling came off reliever, Dick Marlowe, with one out.
Agganis, who opened the inning with a single, slid under the throw of
leftfielder, Bob Nieman. The run broke up a see-saw battle that was
tied at 4-4 in the ninth by Detroit pinch-hitter, Fred Hatfield's two
run homer into the right field stands.
The victory was given to Tom Brewer, who allowed nine hits and struck
out 11 over the whole distance. It was his second win against two
losses.
Agganis had knocked in one run and had put a second in position to
help Frank Sullivan win the first game. He had been hitless in the
second game, but lined a single to open up the 12th inning. A good
sacrifice bunt by Sammy White sent Agganis to second. Ted Lepcio was
then given an intentional pass, before Bolling clipped a single into
left field. Agganis was waved around third just as Nieman picked up
the ball. He barreled into catcher Frank House, as umpire Larry Napp
signaled him "safe".
The Sox belted starter, Ned Garver, for 13 of their 16 hits,
including a seventh inning homer by Don Lenhardt. He gave up single
runs in the second, third and sixth innings, but got off the hook on
Hatfield's homer.
In the second inning, Brewer broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when
he singled Ted Lepcio home. Lenhardt made it 4-2 with his homer in
the seventh inning. Brewer had the game well in hand, going into the
ninth inning. He walked Johnny Pesky and then Hatfield homered to
send the game into extra innings.
Sullivan won his third game in the opener although he needed help
from Ellis Kinder in the ninth inning. Though out-hit 9-11 in the
game, the Sox bunched eight of them in the first six innings off
starter, Steve Gromek. They scored two runs in the first inning. Don
Lenhardt walked and Jackie Jensen singled. Agganis blooped a
single to left to score Lenhardt and put Jensen on third. White's
single brought in Jensen.
The Sox made it 3-0 and scored the winning run in the third inning on
a screwy inning. Karl Olson opened with a single and Lenhardt was hit
with a pitch. Agganis singled to right and Lenhardt was erased at
home. Agganis' single sent Jensen to third and he scored on White's
double.
The Tigers loaded the bases on Sullivan in the fifth and eighth
innings, but scored only once each time. Frank House opened the ninth
with a hit, but Kinder came on to retire the next three batters on
six pitches. |
