Sammy White's 9th inning triple drives home
the walk-off winning run for the Sox

June 9, 1954 ... Sammy White, who was batting .421 on the homestand, slashed out a ninth inning triple to give the Red Sox a 7-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. White's smash, his third hit of the game, scored Jackie Jensen with the winning run. He drove in three runs while he and Jensen scored six of the Sox seven runs.

Frank Sullivan notched his fourth victory by pitching two scoreless relief innings. The Sox were facing Bob Turley and had the game tied at 6-6, when Turley was knocked out after having pitched seven innings. Howie Fox followed, but it was Mike Blyzka who gave up the Sox winning run after facing only two batters in the ninth inning. He had thrown only four pitches when he lost the game. Jensen singled on the second pitch Blyzka threw him, before White sliced a triple on the second pitch he saw.

Ted Lepcio was another big gun. He tripled in two runs in the seventh inning, to tie the score at 6-6 against Turley. Turley had a rough day, walking nine and striking out four, giving up eight hits in seven innings, when he was lifted.

Sox starter, Bill Henry, was equally ineffective. He had a 4-1 lead after three innings when he suddenly lost his stuff in the the fourth inning, giving up five runs and the lead.

It remained, with the Orioles leading 6-4, until the seventh inning. Jensen singled with one out and Harry Agganis popped up. Then Lepcio drilled a triple into right center to score both Jensen and Agganis, who were both trying to pull off a double steal, and the game was tied. Sullivan was brought in and pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
