The Red Sox win a see-saw
battle August 21, 1954 ... Don Lenhardt slashed a two-run 12th inning single up the middle, with two outs off Whitey Ford, to give the Red Sox a 10-9 victory over the Yankees. The hit brought home both Sammy White and Billy Consolo. The Sox came from behind four times in this see-saw game. Lenhardt's drive scored Sammy White and Billy Consolo. Ellis Kinder started for the Sox and had a 5-1 lead going into the eighth inning. Joe Collins led off by beating out a base hit and after Mickey Mantle flied out, Kinder walked Yogi Berra. Bill Skowron singled home a run and Gene Woodling brought home another. Sid Hudson took over and Hank Bauer slugged his first pitch into the nets, to put New York ahead, 6-5. In the bottom of the ninth, with Johnny Sain pitching, Harry Agganis lined a triple off the center field wall. It scored Jimmy Piersall, running for Ted, who had walked before him, to tie the game at 6-6. The Yankees went back out front, 8 to 6, when they scored two runs off Russ Kemmerer in the 10th inning, but Sammy White's two-run homer, with Grady Hatton on base, in the bottom of the inning, tied the game up once again at 8-8. In the top of the 12th, the Yankees took a 9-8 edge on Andy Carey's lead-off triple, scoring on a sacrifice fly. Ford looked sharp after coming into the game in the 10th inning and the score tied. He got pinch-hitter Ted Lepcio on strikes to open the 12th inning. Ford then gave up a base hit to White and walked both Consolo and pinch-hitter Mickey Owen to fill the bases. Billy Goodman next smashed a liner back to the mound and after Ford speared the ball, he threw to second base to try and double up Consolo, but had he thrown to first, he easily would have nabbed pinch-runner Tom Brewer, who had taken a couple of steps toward second. That set the stage for Lenhardt's walk-off base hit. Kinder was nicked for a run in the first inning on doubles by Joe Collins and Mantle. Jackie Jensen knocked in three of the Sox first five runs, upping his RBI total for the season to 90. The Sox tied the game in the third when Jensen singled home Goodman from second. In the fifth inning the Sox went ahead 4 to 1. Goodman doubled off Tom Morgan and William was passed intentionally. Jensen brought them both home with a triple to the left of the bullpens in right center. Ralph Branca came in for New York to pitch the seventh inning and walked both Williams and Jensen. Agganis sacrificed them over and Karl Olson's fly ball scored Williams, making the score 5 to 1. Kemmerer worked the last 3 1/3 innings, to gain his second victory. It was the second rude jolt administered to the Yankees pennant hopes, by the Sox, in 24 hours and dropped them four games behind the league-leading Indians. |
