Sam Mele brings home the game winner August 28, 1954 ... Sam Mele beat the Baltimore Orioles with an 11th inning single, after he opened the game with a home run, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 3 to 2. Mele's walk-off hit was his third of the game. It was set up when O's shortstop Jim Bridewiser dropped a throw to second from pitcher, Bob Chakales on an attempted force on Ted Lepcio. Billy Consolo reached first on the play and Ellis Kinder moved them up on a sacrifice bunt. Mele then ended the evening with a single to right. Vern Stephens singled, was sacrificed to second and scored the tying run in the ninth inning, on Chuck Diering's single, to ruin a great pitching duel between Mel Parnell and Don Larsen. Ellis Kinder then came in with one out and two men on. He struck out pinch-hitter Dick Kryhoski and got pinch-hitter Gil Coan to fly out and send the game into extra innings. Kinder allowed only one harmless base hit in 2 2/3 innings and picked up his seventh win of the year. Mele had been sold back to the Red Sox earlier in the year by the Orioles and led off the first inning with a tremendous home run over the left field screen on Larsen's first pitch. The Sox added another run in the fourth inning on Consolo's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, that scored Grady Hatton, to put the Sox ahead 3-1. The Orioles scored in the sixth inning when Cal Abrams tripled home Larsen, who had opened the inning with a double. |
