“DIARY OF A WINNER”

YAZ CONNECTS FOR 38TH HR

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 6 ...
"THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM"
Yaz belts 2 HRs in 8-2 Sox romp in DC

September 5, 1967 ... Carl Yastrzemski personally wrecked the Senators with two home runs, a single and four RBIs in seven innings, while Gary Bell was pitching an 8 to 2 victory for the Red Sox. Yaz singled in the first inning to set up a run and knocked his 37th home run over the fence in the fourth with two on. And in the seventh he hit his 38th homer into the same area..

Bell had a shutout going for eight innings but Washington put together four straight singles for two runs and had two men on with two out in the ninth, when Mike Epstein struck out to end the game. He now has 11 wins and 11 losses for the season and is 10 and 6 with the Red Sox, since being traded from Cleveland.

The Red Sox started off against southpaw Frank Bertania with a run in the first inning on a walk to Jerry Adair, Yaz's single to right and George Scott's infield roller to third base that scored Adair.

In the fourth inning, the Red Sox's blasted out of their hitting slump and scored six runs off three different Washington pitchers. Reggie Smith started the inning by grounding out and then Ken Harrelson doubled to deep center, for the first of three hits he got in the ballgame.

Rico Petrocelli followed with a triple to left and Elston Howard hit a ground ball through Eddie Brinkman's legs for an error. When Gary Bell lined a single, Bertania was replaced by Bob Priddy. He walked Joe Foy and Adair hit a sacrifice fly to Frank Howard that scored Elston Howard. Yaz came up next and hit a three and two pitch almost directly over second base for his 37th home run, putting the Sox up 7 to 0.

Yaz started the seventh inning with his second home run of the game off Joe Coleman. George Thomas gave Yaz a rest and took over in left field in the bottom of the seventh.

Bell breezed through seven innings, but in the eighth, the Red Sox defense booted the ball around. With two outs in the inning, Jerry Adair missed catching a line drive by Fred Valentine. Then Rico Petrocelli booted a ground ball hit by Ed Stroud by trying to turn a doubleplay too quickly. Ken McMullen walked to load the bases, but Bell got out of it when Frank Howard lifted a fly ball to left.

He wasn't so lucky in the ninth however. Dick Nen led off with a single to right, but was canceled on a doubleplay ball by Cap Peterson. Then came four straight singles that scored two runs. When Mike Epstein came in to pinch-hit for the pitcher, he took three healthy swings, but got nothing but air and ended the game.

Yaz now leads the American League in seven categories: home runs with 38, RBIs with 101, total bases with 304, slugging at .601, hits with 158, runs with 95 and extra bases with 67.

José Santiago was hit in the eye during batting practice, when a ground ball took a bad hop and hit him in the face. There is nothing serious about his condition and he is expected to make his next start. Mike Andrews was scheduled to play second base, but pulled a back muscle during batting practice. Tony Conigliaro has been back to the hospital several times and no timetable has been set regarding his return.

Catcher Gerry Moses was brought up from Pittsfield and was in uniform, as was Russ Gibson. Ken Brett was in the bullpen but probably will not get play unless a game gets out of hand.
