ANDREWS SCORES THE
WALK-OFF RUN |
Reggie saves the Sox in the ninth
August 8, 1969 ...
The Red Sox were losing to the Seattle Pilots going into the
ninth-inning by a score of 3 to 2. But they scored three runs in the
last half of the inning to win the game 5 to 4. In the top of the
ninth the Red Sox were behind when pitcher Fred Talbot connected for a home run
over the left-field wall off Lee Stange to give the Pilots a 4 to 2 advantage.
But in the bottom of the ninth, George Scott led off with a double into the
gap in left-center. Fred Talbot was yanked and replaced on the mound by Bob
Locker. He gave up a fly ball to Gerry Moses deep to right, that allowed Scotty
to move over to third.
Dick Schofield came up to bat for Stange and lined a single between short and
third, to score Scott, putting the Sox behind by only a run. Mike Andrews
followed with a pitch off his fist and blooped another single to left that moved
Schofield to second.
Another pitching change for the Pilots saw John O'Donoghue replace Locker.
Don Lock next came up to pinch-hit for Dalton Jones and struck out.
Two outs and up came Carl Yastrzemski, who got in the hole with two fast
strikes. Then he took two balls and on the next pitch hit a weak ground ball to
shortstop Ray Oyler. But the veteran bobbled it and the bases were loaded.
That brought up Reggie Smith. O'Donoghue gave him a high curve and Reggie
smacked it between short and third into left field, scoring both Schofield and
Andrews with the tying and winning runs. |
