George Scott and Tony C. bring the Sox back
August 18,
1969 ...
George Scott lined a drive off the centerfield wall with Reggie Smith
on second base, in the 10th inning of the game with the Minnesota
Twins, that won for the Red Sox, 7 to 6. Tony Conigliaro had four
RBIs, three on his 16th homer in the eighth-inning that tied the game
at 6 to 6. Dave Boswell was the starter for the Twins. He pitched
very well until a blister forced him to leave the game in the eighth-inning,
with the Red Sox trailing 6 to 3. Ray Culp at a 3 to 0 lead right off, against
the right-hander of the Twins, but was knocked out of the box in the fourth
inning when Minnesota scored six times.
Mike Andrews had troubles two times at third-base. In the fifth inning, after
he had singled to left field, Carl Yastrzemski hit a long fly ball close to the
foul pole in left. Andrews was rounding second as the ball hit high on the wall
and he raced to third. When he got there, Mike saw third-base coach Eddie
Popowski waving a finger at him, apparently indicating one out. He was telling
him to go back to second base and Mike was tagged out sheepishly, when the ball
came back to the infield and he was only halfway there.
In the ninth-inning, after he had walked and moved to second, when Syd
O'Brien drew a base on balls by southpaw Ron Perranoski, Mike raced to third
base as Yaz hit one back to the mound. Perranoski threw to Leo Cardenas at
second to forced O'Brien and then Cardenas fired to third, as Andrews had
overrun the bag and was tagged out.
The Sox had Boswell a little wobbly in the first inning, when Harmon
Killebrew had a little trouble at third-base. After Andrews had walked, Dalton
Jones hit a long drive down the right-field line that got past Tony Oliva. Oliva
thought the ball was touched by a fan and would be a ground rule double. But
first base umpire Jim Odom thought otherwise. While Andrews raced around the
bases with Jones following, Ted Uhlaender had to run over from centerfield to
pick up the ball in front of the Twins bullpen. Jones wound up on third-base and
Andrews crossed the plate.
Neither Carl Yastrzemski nor Reggie Smith could do anything to produce
another run, but after Rico Petrocelli had walked, Conigliaro dropped-down a
perfect bunt on Killebrew, that scored Jones. Scott then hit a ground ball that
rolled through Killebrew's legs for an error and Rico scored the third run of
the inning.
The fourth inning was a shooting gallery for the Twins and produced six runs.
Cesar Tovar doubled and went to third base on Uhlaender's single to left. Oliva
knocked him in with a single and Killebrew drilled a home run into the nets, his
32nd of the year, giving the Twins a 4 to 3 lead. After a pop fly, Graig Nettles
homered into the right-field bleachers. When George Mitterwald doubled and
Boswell singled, that was the night for Culp. He was replaced by Lee Stange,
with the Sox losing 6 to 3. Stange pitched well until he was taken out in the
eighth-inning.
Yaz singled in the eighth and after Smith had walked and Rico fanned,
Conigliaro had his first look at rookie Bill Zepp, who was just brought up from
the minors. On a one ball and two strike count, Tony took a slider down the
middle and sent it into the nets in left-center field to tie up the game.
In the 10th inning, Reggie walked and was bunted along. Conigliaro was walked
intentionally and Scott, looking for curveball, sent the 28,000 fans home happy.
