HOW TO BLOW A SEVEN GAME LEAD ...
Terry Hughes' sac fly leads the Sox
to a walk-off win
June 29, 1974
...
The Red Sox backed Rogelio Moret with some outstanding defense and
the pushed across an unearned run, without a hit, in the 11th inning
for a 3 to 1 victory over the Yankees, after the 3 1/2 hour battle
was settled on Terry Hughes' bases-loaded sacrifice fly with one out.
Moret allowed seven hits including Bill Sudakis' fourth inning homer,
his seventh of the season, and walked seven. He was tough in the
clutch in going the distance for hid fifth victory in eight
decisions.
Yankees starter Sam McDowell allowed only two hits, but wasn't around
at the finish, giving way to reliever Sparky Lyle in the eighth
inning, after Dwight Evans tied the game by drilling a pitch into the
left field screen for his sixth home run.
McDowell, who spent most of the year on the disabled list, walked
seven but allowed only two hits. He lost his no-hit bid on Evans'
single in the sixth inning, and then was tagged for the home run with
two outs in the eighth inning.
The Red Sox scored the tie-breaking run off Lyle without the benefit
of a hit. He didn't help himself with a throwing error which helped
set up Hughes' sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out. Lyle
suffered his seventh loss in eight decisions against the Sox, since
being traded by the Sox to the Yankees in 1972.
Carl Yastrzemski started the 11th inning by walking on four pitches.
Bob Montgomery then bunted and Lyle fielded the ball, throwing wildly
to first, with both runners safe on the sacrifice and throwing error.
Rick Burleson then walked on four pitches to load the bases.
After attempting a squeeze, Doug Griffin forced Yaz at the plate.
Hughes, filling in at third base for Rico Petrocelli, then lifted a
sacrifice fly to fairly deep center, allowing Monty to score easily.
It was the Sox 11th straight home victory against the Yankees and
20th in their last 21 meetings. The Sox completed a three game sweep. |
