Juan Beniquez' ninth inning single chased home the Sox winning
run as they defeated the Twins, 3 to 2. Doug Griffin opened the
inning with a walk and Rick Burleson doubled. Rick Miller was
intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, before
Beniquez doubled.
The Twins had tied the game in the top of the ninth when Bobby Darwin
opened with a double, moving to third on a long fly ball and scoring
on Glen Bergmann's base hit.
Juan Marichal started the game for the Sox, seeking his fourth
consecutive win, limiting the Twins to one run until the seventh
inning, when Dick Drago took over. Marichal had his scoreless string
snapped at 20 consecutive inning in the first. He raised his
strikeout total to 2301, becoming the 16th pitcher to reach 2300.
Marichal was tagged for a run in the opening inning on a double by
Steve Brye and Tony Oliva's ground ball single. The Sox tied the
score in the third inning. Beniquez singled, stole second and scored
on Rico Perocelli's double off the wall in left center. |
