The Orioles rally past the Sox
April 18, 1975
...
Baltimore Orioles firstbaseman Lee May, took his first look at Fenway
Park's left-field wall and try not to think about it. But he liked
what he saw and power two home runs, driving in seven runs. As the
Orioles beat the Red Sox 9 to 7. After hitting a sacrifice fly in
the first inning, May walked in the fourth. He then lined two wicked three run
shots into the screen atop the left-field wall, in the fifth and again in
seventh inning. His home runs came against Sox starter, Reggie Cleveland.
The Orioles jumped on Cleveland, for two runs on a walk, a double by Jim
Northrup, an infield out and May's sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Jim Rice tied the score on a windblown fly ball into the screen in the second
inning, with Rico Petrocelli on base. The Sox then went out in front, 3 to 2, in
the third, when Juan Beniquez doubled and eventually scored on another double by
Dwight Evans.
Rice then smashed a long drive into left-center for another home run which
triggered a three run fourth inning. Two successive singles by Fred Lynn and Bob
Montgomery followed. Lynn was then thrown out at home when Doug Griffin bounced
one off the pitcher, Ross Grimsley, but he recovered in time to get the out and
save a run. But that didn't last long, when Juan Beniuquez cleared the bases
with a triple into the triangle in right center, giving the Sox a 6-2 lead.
Lee May unloaded with his first homer, with Jim Northrup and Tommy Davis
aboard in the fifth inning, bringing the Orioles to within one run, 6 to 5, with
his shot in the fifth inning. Then in the seventh inning, with Ken Singleton and
Northrup on base, May lined another shot into the left field screen, putting
Baltimore up, 8 to 6.
Fred Lynn had three hits for the Sox, including his third home run of the
year, a tremendous blast off Orioles reliever, Doyle Alexander in the seventh
inning, that brought the Sox back to within a run. But the Orioles added another
run off reliever Diego Segui in the eighth-inning, who walked three batters,
forcing across a run.
The homers by Lynn and Rice brought the Sox home run total for the year to
ten. Lynn now has seven RBIs. |
