“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
April 16, 1975 ... Two home runs by Fred Lynn and one by Carl Yastrzemski helped the Rick Wise gain his first victory since last June, as the Red Sox trimmed the staggering Yankees, 4 to 2. Three home runs off losing pitcher Pat Dobson and reliever Larry Gura continued an early-season long ball assault by opposing teams against Yankee pitchers. Wise scattered nine hits in pitching his first complete game since a year ago. He walked two, struck out five and left Yankee runners stranded in scoring position five times. The Sox jumped on Dobson in the opening inning on Lynn's leadoff single and Yaz's second home run of the year into the right field stands. The Yankees nicked Wise for a run in the second on successive singles by Graig Nettles, Chris Chambliss and Thurman Munson, but Lynn hit his first home run of the year in the third inning off Dobson, making the score 3 to 1, and connected again off Gura in the fifth inning, in his next at bat. The Yankees biggest threat occurred in the seventh inning, when with one out, infield singles by Walt Williams and Maddox, and a walk to Lou Piniella, loaded the bases. But Wise struck out Bobby Bonds and retired Ron Blomberg on a grounder to second. The same two batters had failed in the fifth inning. A singles by Maddox and Lou Piniella was followed by Bonds grounded into a force out at second and Blomberg also grounded out to Griffin at second. Bonds had drawn a walk with one out in the first inning and stole second. He singled with one out in the third and again stole second but both times the Yankees left him stranded. Gura replaced Dobson with one out and the bases loaded in the third. Pinch-hitter Juan Beniquez flew to right-field with the bases loaded and one out, and Bonds threw out Yastrzemski out at the plate to end a threat. Yaz jammed his ankle in the collision with Thurman Munson, but stayed in the game. Walt Williams' ninth inning home run off Wise was the Yankees first one of the season. He hit it, with one out, into the left-field bullpen. Tony Conigliaro missed the game, still nursing a groin pull. And Rico Petrocelli missed the game when he felt pain in his throwing arm during pre-game fielding practice. |
