Bill Lee bamboozles the Yankees
April 15, 1975
...
Dwight Evans' two run single capped a four-run rally that carried the
Red Sox to a 5 to 3 victory over the Yankees and Catfish Hunter. It
was Hunter second loss in as many starts for the Yankees. Hunter
surrendered nine hits in the 7 2/3 innings he pitched, and his ERA
for two appearances is 5.40, and receive the wrath of the Yankees
fans at Shea Stadium with a round of boos. The Yankees nicked
winner Bill Lee for single runs in each of the first three innings, but the Sox
got them back in the fourth against Hunter. Rico Petrocelli started off with a
walk and came around to score on hits by Bernie Carbo and Bob Montgomery. After
Rick Burleson flied out, Doug Griffin popped a single to short center to load
the bases. Fred Lynn's sacrifice fly made the score 3 to 1 and then, after
Griffin stole second base, Evans singled in two more runs to tie the game.
Elliott Maddox had tripled and scored on Rick Burleson's error for the first
Yankee run in the first inning. In the second inning, Thurman Munson tripled and
came in on a single by Graig Nettles. Maddox walked in the third inning and came
around on a single by Alex Johnson and an infield out by Barry Bonds.
The Sox took the lead and chased Hunter in the eighth inning, when Carbo
doubled for his third hit of the game, and Burleson bounced a single up the
middle, scoring pinch runner Rick Miller, making the score 5 to 3.
The Sox threatened Hunter in the second inning, when Petrocelli walked with
one out, and raced to third on Carbo's single. But Montgomery was called out on
strikes and Burleson flied out, leaving the runners stranded. An inning later,
Lynn doubled with one out and Evans walked. But Hunter escaped again, getting
Carl Yastrzemski on a force play and striking out Tony Conigliaro.
Bill Lee went the distance for the Sox, driving the Yankees crazy with his
new eephus curve, allowing five hits to even his record at one and one. Thurman
Munson had two hits off Lee, a triple and a single, the only hit off him in the
last six innings.
Doug Griffin had to leave the game in the eighth with a slight pull in his
hip. Tony Conigliaro is also suffering from a painful groin pull. |
