“DIARY OF A WINNER”

DOC MEDICH

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Doc Medich finds the Red Sox easy prey

April 22, 1975 ... It turned out to be a perfect blending of junk and power, as Doc Medich pitched a three-hitter and Bobby Bonds drove in two runs with a home run, and a single to beat the Red Sox, 5 to 0. Medich allowed a leadoff single to Bernie Carbo, a ground single by Fred Lynn in the sixth inning, and a single by Doug Griffin in the eighth-inning, for his third victory in four decisions. Medich was finding spots with all his stuff, speed and junk, and when he had two strikes on right-handers, he threw them sidearm stuff.

Rick Wise nearly matched Medich pitch for pitch, blanking the Yankees for five innings, but he tired in the final innings. He allowed only four hits and one run through seven innings, but ran into some trouble in the eighth. Sandy Alomar singled, stole second, took third on a groundout, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Elliott Maddox. Then Bonds followed with his third home run of the year. Chris Chambliss doubled in one run and Alomar tripled home another in the ninth-inning for the Yankees.

The Yanks got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Roy White walked on four pitches. Maddox flied deep to center, but White stole second and scored when Bonds lined a three and two pitch into left.

The Red Sox had only six baserunners in the game. Lynn walked on a3-2 pitch before Jim Rice struck out to end the first inning. Bob Montgomery reached on an error by Yankee shortstop Jim Mason in the second inning, and Carl Yastrzemski walked in the ninth-inning.

Lynn and Griffin posed no threat after their hits. Lynn was thrown out attempting to steal and Griffin was out trying to stretch his blooped a single into shallow left field into a double.

Maddox made the fielding play the game, robbing Dwight Evans of an extra base hit in the third inning. He went back to the 379 foot mark in left-center and with perfect timing, leaped up against the wall, to grab Evans' line drive.

Rico Petrocelli was out of the lineup. He had a cortisone shot for his elbow and will be examined again by Doctor Tierney. He is hoping to be able to play in Detroit.
