“DIARY OF A WINNER”

ROY WHITE IS THROWN OUT AT HOME

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox rally to beat the Yankees

April 23, 1975 ... Cecil Cooper started a five run uprising against Catfish Hunter, Sparky Lyle and Dick Tidrow with a pinch-hit triple in the seventh inning, as the Red Sox rallied for an 11 to 7 victory over the Yankees. Hunter was unable to hold a 7 to 3 lead built with the help of two home runs by Roy White. Lyle took the loss after Tidrow surrendered a two run double to Bob Montgomery to finish the decisive rally.

Cooper started the big rally in the seventh inning, by lining a triple to the 420 foot mark in right-center. Bernie Carbo singled him home and then Lyle replaced Hunter, walking Dwight Evans but struck out Carl Yastrzemski. Fred Lynn and Jim Rice both followed with run-scoring singles and Tidrow was called in to face Montgomery. The Sox catcher lined a double to right that scored both Lynn and Rice, and the Sox went from a 7 to 3 deficit to a one run 8 to 7 lead.

The Red Sox scored again in the eighth-inning on a three run double by Lynn off Larry Gura. Gura had come in to replace Tidrow after he had issued three walks to load the bases.

Lynn drove in four runs with two big hits, the first a single in the seventh, and then a billiard shot double down the third-base line in the eighth that highlighted the Sox come back just when it seemed all to be gone down the drain because of the inconsistency of Reggie Cleveland.

The Red Sox scored eight runs in two innings. Hunter allowed six hits and walked four. He was charged with five runs.

Dwight Evans hit a first inning home run that went out like a bullet and barely cleared the wall. Rice had to settle for a two run double in the third, when his drive to left-center did not clear the wall. Still the Red Sox led by a 3 to 2 score until Roy White homered in the top of the third.

White, batting against Sox starter Reggie Cleveland, took him for a two run homer down the right-field line in the third inning. Then batting right-handed against Rogelio Moret, he hit another home run into the left-field screen in the sixth inning. He also had a single, a walk, a stolen base and scored three runs.

Fred Lynn's arm helped in the victory. In the third inning when the Yankees got three runs, Jim Mason hit a double off the wall and Fred he was in perfect position. Not only did he pull the ball off the wall but made a great throw from 370 feet away that was on a dime. He also nailed Ron Blomberg, as he tried to advance from first to third on a single. Dwight Evans also made a strong throw in the first inning that cut down White at the plate.
