GARY SUTHERLAND |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox let one slip away in 10
innings
April 26, 1975
...
Bill Lee tore off his uniform in disgust after Gary Sutherland hit a
game-winning single in the 10th inning, as the Detroit Tigers beat
the Red Sox 3 to 2 at Tiger Stadium. Tom Veryzer led off the inning
with a single to center and moved to center on a sacrifice bunt,
before scoring one out later on Sutherland's scratch infield hit that
got by Doug Griffin. In the first inning with two outs Carl
Yastrzemski lined a single to left. Fred Lynn reached on an error by Sutherland
and Jim Rice's single to left scored Yaz with the first run.
In the second inning, with two outs Rick Burleson bounced one back to Tiger
starter, Vern Ruhle, who threw the ball away, allowing Burleson to scamper over
to third-base. Doug Griffin knocked him in to give the Red Sox a 2 to 1 lead.
Willie Horton knocked in the Tiger's first run in the first inning with a single
and one in the third with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2 to 2.
Lee pitched out of a big jam in the sixth inning. Sutherland led off with a
double and Nate Colbert walked with one out. Then with two outs, Leon Roberts
reached on an infield single to load the bases. Rick Burleson saved a run with a
diving stop of a hard-hit grounder, as the runners moved up to second and third.
Lee then got Dan Meyer to ground out and end the threat.
Rico Petrocelli started off the Red Sox half of the seventh-inning with a
single to center. John Hiller replaced Ruhle and walked Burleson, but he got
Doug Griffin to pop out and pinch hitter, Tony Conigliaro to ground out.
In the eighth-inning with the score tied at 2 to 2, Dwight Evans singled and
Carl Yastrzemski walked. Nobody out and the cleanup hitter, Fred Lynn, came to
the plate. The count went to 2-2 and Lynn was given the order to bunt. The pitch
was up around his eyes and he fouled it off, for the third strike. On a 3-2
pitch to the next batter Jim Rice, both Evans in Yastrzemski took off and Rice
grounded out, leaving two more men on base.
In the top of the 10th after walking Bob Heise and Evans, Lynn lined a ball
down the first base line. Bob Heise rounded third when Leon Roberts picked up
the ball and bobbled it. But for some strange reason, Heise stopped and didn't
score when he could have done so with ease. So with the bases loaded, Hiller
struck out Rice and Juan Beniquez to end another threat.
Rico Petrocelli was back in the lineup, but Tony Conigliaro was still on the
bench wondering what was going to happen to him. |
