THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Sox
are swept away in Detroit
April 27, 1975
...
The Red Sox lost their third game to the Tigers by one run. Ben
Oglivie drove in three runs with a home run in the fifth inning, to
lead Detroit to a 5 to 4 victory over the Sox and a series sweep.
Ron LeFlore snapped a 2 to 2 tie with a solo home run for the Tigers in the
fourth inning. An inning later, Oglivie unloaded his first home run of the
season after Dan Meyer had singled. The blast into the lower deck in right field
knocked Sox starter Rick Wise, out of the game and sent him to his second loss
in three decisions.
Red Sox secondbaseman Doug Griffin booted LeFlore's leadoff grounder in the
first. LeFlore raced to third on Gary Sutherland's base hit, before Colbert
snapped a 0-for-17 streak with a run-scoring single. Gary Sutherland opened the
Tiger third inning with a single. Willie Horton singled and Meyer walked with
two outs before Ogilvie was hit by Wise's pitch to bring in a run.
The Sox picked up their first two runs on a leadoff homer by Bernie Carbo in
the first inning and a single by Bob Montgomery, following Rico Petrocelli's
double in the fourth inning, off Tiger's starter, Lerrin LaGrow, that tied up
the game at 2 to 2.
Down 5 to 2, Bernie Carbo and Dwight Evans led off the ninth-inning with home
runs to chase Tom Walker and John Hiller came in to get Yaz on a called third
strike, Fred Lynn on a pop-up and Petrocelli on a ground out, after Jim Rice had
reached on a single.
Wise started for the Sox and lasted four innings. He struck out the side in
the first, but gave up two singles with the error by Griffin that gave the
Tigers the tying run. |
