THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Gaylord
Perry cruises past the Sox
April 30, 1975
...
Gaylord Perry moved into 14th place in baseball's all-time strikeout
list, while defeating the Red Sox 8 to 1. It was his 13th straight
victory over Boston. He struck out nine, including Jim Rice four
times and gave up five hits in moving past Early Wynn among baseballs
all-time major league leaders. He now has 2337 strikeouts in his
career and moved past Wynn when he struck out Carl Yastrzemski, with
runners on first and third, in the fifth inning. Boog Powell drove
in three runs, including his fourth home run of the season, and helped Perry
boosts his season record to four wins and two losses, while posting his 202nd
major league victory.
It was pretty much a joke once the Indians scored five runs in the first
three innings. Staked to an early lead, Perry cruised to his 14th victory in 15
decisions over the Red Sox since he joined the Indians from the San Francisco
Giants in 1972.
The Indians nicked Luis Tiant for two unearned runs on an infield hit by
George Hendrick and a single by Charlie Spikes in the first inning. It was set
up by Rico Petrocelli's error on John Lowenstein's leadoff bunt. Hendrick,
Powell and John Ellis singled across runs in the third inning and Powell drilled
a long home run far into the centerfield bleachers in the fifth inning.
Perry had Fred Lynn and Jim Rice off balance all night. He lost his shutout
in the fifth inning on Doug Griffin's two-out single, a walk and a single by
Dwight Evans. Three of the singles off Perry were of the scratch variety.
Griffin poked an outside pitch into shallow right for a hit in the third inning,
Yastrzemski beat out a single off secondbaseman Jack Brohamer's glove in the
fourth inning, and Bob Montgomery beat out a slow roller to third in the
ninth-inning. |
