“DIARY OF A WINNER”

COACH STAN WILLIAMS SIGNALS FOR DIEGO SEGUI

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox hold on and survive as the Indians succumb

May 1, 1975 ... Bernie Carbo triggered a three-run first inning with a leadoff double and then tagged Cleveland starter Jim Perry, with a two run home run in the second inning, as the Red Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7 to 6 victory over the Indians at Fenway Park. A nice and safe 7 to 2 game ended up by a score of 7 to 6, with Diego Segui punching out pinch-hitter Leron Lee in the ninth-inning with runners on first and third.

Carbo got the Red Sox rolling on a double in the first inning, which Hendrick just missed in right. With one out Carl Yastrzemski lined a single to right that scored Carbo. Fred Lynn then walked and Rico Petrocelli scored both runners with a double high off the left-field wall.

Rick Burleson led off the Red Sox second inning with a line drive single to left and was sacrificed to second by Doug Griffin. Carbo then sliced his third home run into the left-field screen, that spelled the end of Perry. In his last 11 games, Carbo has had 12 hits and 11 walks.

Down 5-0, the Indians scored twice in the third inning on singles by Buddy Bell, Frank Duffy, George Hendrick and Frank Robinson. The Red Sox added another run in their half of the third inning, when Fred Lynn beat out a perfect bunt down the third-base line, took third on a slow ground single by Rice, and scored on an infield out.

Perry, with a 34-20 lifetime record against the Red Sox was no puzzle for them. He gave up five runs and five hits before being relieved by Jim Kern with one out in the second inning. Kern was nicked for the run in the third and another in the fifth on Jim Rice's third home run of the year, a high drive just inside the foul pole down the left-field line.

Staked to a 7 to 2 lead, Lee did not allow a hit after Robinsons RBI single in the third inning, until Ken Berry started the eighth with a bloop single to shallow right. Hendrick walked and, with two outs, Ellis drilled the ball off the back wall near the 379 foot mark for his third home run of the season, making the score 7 to 5.

After Buddy Bell led off the ninth-inning with a drive Dwight Evans head in right-center, Rico Carty's pinch-hit RBI single made the score 7 to 6. Lee was relieved by Diego Segui was able to nail down the final out in the ninth-inning.
