THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox wallop
the Tigers
May 3, 1975
...
The Tigers began the afternoon by offering the Red Sox six outs in
the first inning. The Sox sent 11 batters to the plate, scored six
runs on just four hits plus some shabby Detroit fielding, and rolled
to a 12 to 2 victory over the Tigers. Jim Rice's bases-loaded
single was the big blow off Lerrin LaGrow, who lost his first game after three
straight victories. He hurt his own cause with two walks, one intentional, and
was the victim of two errors, plus a couple of other defensive lapses by Tiger
fielders. 18 Sox baserunners jogged around the bases in his 5 2/3 innings of
work.
A pair of walks, sandwiched around a double by Carl Yastrzemski, set the
stage for Rice's two run single in the first inning. Fred Lynn scored on a
fielder's choice and Rice scored on an error by Aurelio Rodriguez.. Rick
Burleson singled home the fifth run, and another error, followed by Doug
Griffin's fluke single on a pop up, which fell safely in center field, left the
bases loaded again. Bernie Carbo's sacrifice fly completed the big inning,
giving the Red Sox a 6 to 0 lead.
Walks to Yaz and Rico Petrocelli, sandwiched around a single by Lynn loaded
the bases and Bob Montgomery's bases-loaded single, made the score 8 to 0 in the
fourth inning. Rick Wise coasted in from there. The veteran right-hander checked
the Tigers on eight hits. With four good outings in his last five starts, the
warranties about his arm seem to have come to an end.
In the sixth inning, base hits by Lynn and Monty, followed by a base hit by
Burleson, accounted for the ninth run. Then in the eighth-inning, singles by
Rice and Monty followed by another Burleson base hit brought the Sox run
total up to 10. Monty next scored on an error by shortstop Tom Veryzer and
Burleson scored on a base hit by Dwight Evans completing the 12 run accounting.
Montgomery and Burleson each had three hits, Lynn had two hits and two walks,
Rice had a pair singles, and so did Doug Griffin. |
