Bill Lee's six hit pitching and Bob Montgomery's two run single led
the Red Sox to a 4 to 1 victory over the Indians at Municipal Stadium
in Cleveland. Monty singled to center field put the Sox ahead 2 to 0
in the second inning. It followed singles by Jim Rice and Rico
Petrocelli and an error by Cleveland secondbaseman, Jack Brohammer.
The Sox double that scored when Indians pitcher, Dick Bosman, hit Rick Burleson
with a pitch to start the third inning. Fred Lynn's double brought him in and
Jim Rice's line drive single to right brought in Lynn, chasing Bosman out of the
game. Bosman gave up four runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Indians' reliever, Jim Kern, held the Sox to four scattered hits for the
remainder of the game, striking out three and walking three. Two of those hits
occurred back-to-back by Doug Griffin and Rick Miller in the ninth inning. The
Sox stranded seven runners, while the Indians left six men on board.
Lee gave up a home run to George Hendrick in the sixth inning, but survived
minor threats in in the first inning and again in the seventh inning. In the
first inning Frank Robinson reached third after walking and moving across on a
single by Hendrick and a fielder's choice. Back to back singles by Boog Powell
and Charlie Spikes with one out, caused a minor problem in the seventh. Lee
struck out three and walked two batters in the game.
Bob Montgomery leads the Six in RBIs with 15 and is the only member of the
team to have more than one game-winning hit with four. |
