THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox bats come alive
May 7, 1975
...
Jim Rice's homer triggered a three run sixth inning
that broke a 1 to 1 tie and carried the Sox to a 4 to 2 victory over
the Indians. Rice (.324 BA) hit a solid shot over the left-field
fence off Fritz Peterson for his fifth home run of the season. Rico
Petrocelli, Dwight Evans and Tony Conigliaro all followed with
singles, to make the score 3 to 1 and chase Peterson out of the game.
Then Dwight Evans scored on Bob Montgomery's grounder off reliever
Tom Buskey, to make the score 4 to 1. The Indians had scored the
first run of the game in the second inning off Reggie Cleveland, on consecutive
singles by George Hendrick, Rico Carty and John Ellis. The Red Sox tied up the
game in the fifth when Doug Griffin singled, Juan Beniquez was hit by a pitch
and Rick Burleson singled. The Indians scored again in the eighth on a triple by
Oscar Gamble and a base hit by Boog Powell, making the score 4 to 2.
Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli are fighting slumps. Yaz went out for
extra hitting after the game. Petrocelli, who was out with a bad elbow, still
hasn't found his timing.
Tony Conigliaro returned to the lineup, getting the game-winning RBI in the
sixth inning with a hard single. With left-hander Fritz Peterson, starting the
game for the Indians, Fred Lynn and Bernie Carbo were benched in favor of Juan
