THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Bill Lee shuts out the Angels and
the Sox move into first place
May 24,
1975 ...
Bill Lee posted his second consecutive shutout and sixth win,
with a five-hitter as the Red Sox whipped the Angels, 6 to 0, on
three-run homers by Rico Petrocelli and Rick Burleson.
Andy Hassler was the victim of the Sox homers, putting himself in a
hole with his wildness before being replaced in the fifth inning.
Hassler started the second inning by walking Dwight Evans and Tony
Conigliaro. Petrocelli ran the count to 2-2 and then belted his
fourth homer of the year off a screen upright above the left field
wall, to give the Sox a 3 to 0 lead.
Petrocelli opened up the fourth inning by beating out a slow topper
down the third base line. With two outs, Juan Beniquez walked and
Burleson followed with a homer into the screen making the score 6 to
0.
Lee worked out of a jam to open the game. He walked the first batter,
Jerry Remy who was sacrificed to second base before stealing third.
Tommy Harper next walked and stole second, but Lee struck out Bill
Sudakis and got Dave Chalk to pop out to Dwight Evans. Lee leads the
Sox staff with six wins and was brilliant in four of his last five
starts. He had pitched 21 straight scoreless innings, including two
straight shutout complete games.
The victory was the sixth of the last seven games for the Sox, who
moved into first base by 1/2 game over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Carlton Fisk took batting practice for the first time against the
pitching machine under the center field bleachers. |
