THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox slug their way past Nolan Ryan
May 23,
1975 ...
Bernie Carbo, Carl Yastrzemski and Dwight Evans slammed
home runs off Nolan Ryan, in this highly anticipated pitchers duel
between him and Luis Tiant, and powered the Sox to a 6 to 1 victory
over the California Angels. Tiant pitched a complete game and Ryan
was gone after six innings.
Carbo put the Sox in front to stay by slicing a 3-2 pitch into the
left field screen for his seventh homer of the year, to lead off for
the Sox in the first inning.
In the fifth inning, the Sox had Tim Blackwell on third and Carbo on
second with nobody out. Rick Burleson flied to right to score
Blackwell and that brought up Yaz, who singled after being knocked
down by a Ryan fastball in the fourth inning. He lined a two-run
homer into the bleachers over the Angels' bullpen.
Evans connected for another home run with a shot into the screen in
left center in the sixth inning. He had been struck out twice by Ryan
previously.
Fred Lynn later slammed a solo homer in the eight inning after Ryan
was taken out and replaced by Chuck Dobson. Ryan allowed five hits
and struck out seven after six innings of work.
Luis Tiant, backed by the four home runs, evened his record at 5-5.
He allowed eight hits, avenging a 2-0 loss to the Angels earlier in
Anaheim. He lost his shutout in the sixth inning when he walked
Mickey Rivers with two outs. Rivers scored on Tommy Harper's double
off the wall in left center. Tiant struck out three batters in the
last two innings.
Three times in the first four innings, the Angels tried to steal
second on Sox catcher, Tim Blackwell, and were thrown on perfect
throws to second base.
The victory moved the Sox to 1/2 game behind the Milwaukee Brewers. |
