JERRY REMY SLIDES HOME SAFELY |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Jerry Remy leads the Angels past the Sox
May 22,
1975 ...
Jerry Remy scored after a leadoff triple and then drove in two
more runs to help the California Angels beat the Red Sox, 6 to 3.
Remy started the game by slamming the ball over Fred Lynn's head in
center field and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers.
Billy Smith then tripled over Dwight Evans' head on a ball he shied
away from, and scored when Remy lined a sac fly to left in the third
inning.
Lynn's fifth homer of the year was a three-run shot into the Sox
bullpen, after singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice, with two
outs, that gave the Sox a 3 to 2 lead in the third inning. Lynn also
had two more hits in his return to the Sox lineup.
Bill Singer beat Rick Wise though each pitched similar games. While
Wise's Sox teammates fouled up a couple of key plays, he was beaten
on five straight singles with two outs in the fourth inning.
In the decisive fourth inning, with two outs, Dave Chalk singled and
scored on singles by Tom Egan and Morris Nettles. Smith singled in
the tying run and Remy capped the rally with a sharp ground single to
right. Smith was thrown out trying for third on Remy's hit, and Rick
Wise retired the next 12 batters in order, but the damage had been
done. The Angels had a 5-3 lead.
The Angels' final run came in the ninth inning when Bruce Bochte
singled, was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on
Nettles' single to center.
Angels' starter, Bill Singer settled down after Lynn's homer and went
on to his fourth win in nine decisions. |
