Yaz's grand slam pushes the Sox by the A's
May 21,
1975 ...
Carl Yastrzemski hit his sixth career grand slam and Rico
Petrocelli contributed a two-run shot, powering the Red Sox to a 7-3
victory and series sweep of the Oakland Athletics.
Yaz lined his grand slam just inside the "Pesky Pole" in right field
after the Red Sox loaded the bases against Ken Holtzman on singles by
Bob Montgomery, Juan Beniquez and Rick Burleson.
Gene Tenace belted a home run in the second inning. Then Holtzman was
clipped for a run in the second on Dwight Evans' double, a fly ball
that moved him to third, and a passed ball that got by Gene Tenace.
Oakland took a 2 to 1 lead in the third inning on Bill North's
infield hit, a fielder's choice by Reggie Jackson, a stolen base by
Reggie and a double by Joe Rudi. Jackson also homered in the eighth
inning.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Ken Holtzman walked Tony
Conigliaro and Rico drilled the next pitch high into the left field
screen for his third homer of the year, giving the Sox the lead, 3 to
2. The only other hit off Holtzman until the seventh inning, was a
double by Jim Rice.
In the seventh inning, Montgomery started it off with a pop fly
blooper that fell safely in center field. Monty's hit was followed by
quick singles by Beniquez and Burleson. Then on a 1-1 count, Carl
Yastrzemski cleared the bases with a lined shot for the grandslam,
his third homer of the season. The Sox lead was now 7 to 2. The four
RBIs boosted his career total to 1194, 50th on the all-time list.
Reggie Cleveland went the distance, allowing seven hits, but later
said his arm hurt from the second inning on. After Rudi's run-scoring
double in the third inning, he allowed just three more hits, a single
by Sal Bando in the sixth inning, a single by Claudell Washington in
the seventh, and Jackson's homer in the eighth. |
