TONY C GREETED AFTER HE HOMERS |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Bill Lee blanks the A's, 7-0
May 20,
1975 ...
Bill Lee pitched a two-hitter and Jim Rice, Tony Conigliaro
and Juan Beniquez belted home runs as the Sox whipped Vida Blue and
the Oakland A's, 7-0.
Lee retired the first 13 batters when Sal Bando grounded a 2-1
pitch just inside third base for a double. Lee then set down 11
batters in a row before Angel Mangual got a bad hop base hit to lead
off the ninth inning. Lee struck out one batter, in recording his
first shutout of the season.
Tony C. singled home Dwight Evans, who had singled and taken second
on a walk to Rico Petrocelli and Beniquez doubled Evans in, as the
Sox took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jim Rice's homer put the
Sox up, 3 to 0. Conigliaro's first homer at Fenway since 1970, in the
fourth inning, made the score, 4 to 0.
Blue suffered only his second loss of the year and was tagged for
eight hits, including Rice's sixth homer and Conigliaro's second
homer, ruining his chance at becoming the first pitcher to win nine
games in the majors. He allowed six runs before being taken out in
the fifth inning. With one out Yaz walked in the fifth and scored on a double by
Evans. He scored on a base hit by Petrocelli and the Sox were ahead,
6 to 0.
Beniquez pinch hit in the second inning, being taken out of the
starting lineup because of a cut on the back of his head. He unloaded
his first homer of the season against Rollie Fingers in the sixth
inning to tally the seventh Sox run. |
