“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Juan Beniquez gives Luis Tiant a lift

May 19, 1975 ... Juan Beniquez turned the base paths into track lanes, made a fine catch, had two hits and a walk, a lined out twice, scoring three runs. He scored the tie-breaking run all the way from first base on Rick Burleson's hit-and-run single in the seventh inning, sparking the Sox to a 10-5 victory over the Oakland A's.

Gene Tenace drove in four runs for the A's with two home runs off Luis Tiant. The A's were terrible defensively, committing four errors and at least one serious mental miscue.

A single by Reggie Jackson and Joe Rudi's double gave the A's a run in the first inning and Tenace made the score 2-0 with a homer in the second inning.

Oakland starter Dave Hamilton held the Sox hitless until Rico Petrocelli hit a long home run with one out in the fifth inning. The Sox capitalized on a porous Oakland defense for four more runs in the inning and a 5-2 lead. Third baseman Sal Bando made one costly error and shortstop Bert Campaneris committed two errors, make three of the Sox runs unearned. After Rico's homer, Bob Montgomery singled and Doug Griffin's double play grounder was bobbled by Bando. Beniquez singled to tie the score. Campaneris made errors on the next two ground balls that allowed two more runs and Jim Rice singled in Yastrzemski for the fifth run.

Tiant was tagged for three runs in the Oakland seventh, as Billy Williams walked, Bando singled and Tenace drilled another homer into the center field bleachers. It marked the fifth time in his career that Tenace had hit two homers in a game. He had a chance to add to his RBI production in the eight inning, but grounded out with runners on first and third to end the inning.

With the score tied a five apiece, Beniquez drew a one out walk from Blue Moon Odom and came all the way around on Burleson's single to right center in the seventh inning. A walk to Yastrzemski and doubles by Jim Rice and Dwight Evans added three more runs off Odom. The Sox added a run in the eighth inning on singles by Beniquez and Burleson and a sac fly from Yaz that made the score 9 to 5.

Beniquez singled and scored his third run of the game in the eighth inning. The young outfielder and Burleson again worked the hit-and-run, Beniquez taking third on Burleson's pop single to right, and scored on Yastrzemski's fly, making it 10 to 5.

Tiant, who was shut out in his last two starts wasn't as sharp as usual, allowing 11 hits.  However, he was tough when her had to be, except for the two home run pitches to Tenace, going the distance and striking out six batters and walking just one.

Carlton Fisk was at the park for the first time since having the splint removed from his arm and did some light work in the outfield before the game.
