Bernie Carbo's bat leads the Sox by KC

Bernie Carbo drove in four runs with a pair of
homers and the Sox snapped a five game losing streak with a 4 to 2
victory over the Royals. Backed by Carbo's bat, Rick Wise earned his
fourth victory in seven decisions, striking out nine and allowing six
hits.
Carbo, who has 22 hits and 20 walks in his last 20 games, led off the
Red Sox first inning with a base hit off Nelson Briles, but was
erased on a doubleplay.
In the third inning, Doug Griffin singled to right center and Tim
Blackwell walked. Carbo the lined his fifth homer of the season into
the Sox bullpen. With two outs in the fifth inning, Carbo was given
the green light on a 3-0 pitch. He lined a shot high into the left
field screen for another homer, putting the Sox ahead, 3-2. Carbo
smacked three hits in the game and raised his batting average to .355
The Royals got to Wise for runs on Hal McRae's single in the third
inning and Fran Healy's home run in the fourth inning. Wise allowed
just one hit, a single by Frank White, after Healy's homer. He
finished strong, retiring the last eight batters after White's hit. |
