THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Royals upend the Sox for the third time
May 17, 1975
...
The Sox lost their fifth straight game and third to the
Royals.
John Mayberry hit his fourth homer of the year and the
Royals beat the Sox once again, 5 to 3. Mayberry sent a towering
drive into the right field stands after Amos Otis started the third
inning with a base hit.
The Royals scored their first run in the opening inning off Reggie
Cleveland. Vada Pinson reached on a missed third strike, that got by
Bob Montgomery and stole second. He made it to third base when
Cleveland uncorked a wild pitch and scored on Hal McRae's fly to
center.
Kansas City starter Al Fitzmorris surrendered a first inning leadoff
homer to Bernie Carbo into the net, to tie up the game, and two more hits before
working out of the jam.
In second inning the Royals grabbed the lead back. Cleveland walked
George Brett and he scored on a double by Fran Healy. Mayberry's
homer made the score 4 to 1. Frank White then connected for his
second major league home run with two outs in the sixth inning.
Carbo started the bottom of the sixth with a double off the wall and
Cecil Cooper singled him home. A walk to Yaz followed. Mayberry
booted Fred Lynn's grounder to load the bases. Cooper was thrown out
at home on a grounder by Rico Petrocelli to Fred Patek. Rick Burleson
finished the threat by grounding into a doubleplay.
Fitzmorris earned his fifth victory in eight decisions before getting
relief help from Doug Bird. Bird came in during the eighth inning
after Fred Lynn slammed a solo homer into the Sox bullpen. |
