THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The
Rangers clobber the Sox pitchers
June 9,
1975 ...
The Texas Rangers humbled the Red Sox, 12 to 4. Rick Wise got
hit the hardest, giving up six runs in 2 2/3 innings, including four
on Jim Sundburg's first career grand slam in the second inning. He
also walked five batters.
Reggie Cleveland came in next and gave up a two-run single to Roy
Howell in the third inning. Wise had walked the bases loaded to end
of his day. That brought in Cleveland.
Jackie Brown, who replaced Rangers starter Bill Hands, after he
suffered a pulled muscle in the third inning, seemingly was in
complete command. Jeff Burroughs added a titanic home run in the
fifth inning, to put Texas up 7-0.
But it changed in the sixth inning. The Red Sox momentarily came back
to life and pushed across four runs on a grand slam by Bernie Carbo.
Juan Beniquez, Dwight Evans and Doug Griffin knocked out consecutive
base hits to load the bases. Carbo then drove a Brown fastball into
the left field net.
But the joy was short lived. With the score 7-4, Cleveland gave up
three hits and a run in the seventh inning before Rogelio Moret
snuffed out the fire. Then Diego Segui came in and was the victim of
a par of two-run shots by Toby Harrah and Jim Spencer.
Fred Lynn extended his hitting streak to 13 games but struck out and
grounded out in two clutch situations. |
