JEFF BURROUGHS SCORES |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Jeff Burroughs' hot bat again does damage
June 10,
1975 ...
Jeff Burroughs slammed a two-run homer, his sixth in the last
seven games and the 15th of the season, to spark the Texas Rangers to
an 8 to 3 win over the Red Sox. Backed by a 13-hit attack,
Ferguson Jenkins breezed to a win over Luis Tiant.
The Sox took a quick 1-0 lead on Bernie Carbo's leadoff homer, his
tenth, in the first inning. Burroughs' homer in the third inning gave
the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
The Rangers nailed down a sweep of the two game series with two runs,
on three consecutive hits, in the sixth inning. Lenny Randle singled
to right, Roy Howell tripled to right center and Roy Smalley lined
the third hit to center, boosting their lead to 4-1.
Successive triples by Jim Rice and Tim McCarver provided another run
for the Sox in the sixth inning.
Then in the seventh inning, Tiant was shelled for another four runs.
Luis gave up two singles and a free pass that loaded the bases. A
sacrifice fly by Randle, then a double by Joe Lovitto, added two
runs. Tiant's day ended and Rogelio Moret took over. A suicide
squeeze by Smalley and a base hit by Sundberg upped the Texas lead to
8 to 2.
Carbo blasted his second homer of the game in the ninth inning. The
Sox had at least one base runner on in every inning except the third,
but Jenkins proved to be tough in the clutch, striking out six.
Carbo, Rice, McCarver and Doug Griffin each had two hits. Fred Lynn
singled in his first trip to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Jim Burton made his major league debut, getting the Rangers in order
in the ninth inning. |
